What is pup/pet play?
Pup play (or pet play) is a practice in which a person takes on the role of a dog (or handler), and oftentimes uses gear and equipment to further enhance the experience of being a puppy. It has historical roots within the gay leathermen and BDSM subcultures, though has since blossomed into it's own "postmodern-subculture". Most Pup and handler (PAH) communities have changed their abbreviations to now mean Pet and Handlers so that we can embrace inclusivity to include all pets types. All animal types are welcome here.
While heavily sexualized in the mainstream, the more social aspect of pup play has started to become popular within the community. Some even avoid the sexual entirely. This has led to many discussions as to what pup play (and pet play in general) really means to each individual pup, and how it can be used as a form of self expression. For many people, it is a way for them to relax, express themselves, build community, and imaginatively play.
Who can be a human pup?
Anyone can be a pup/pet.
Do I need specific gear to be a human pup?
The main draw of puppy play is getting into the headspace. Some pups are able to do this without any gear at all, while others are more comfortable wearing something like a collar, or a pup hood. Gear is by no means a requirement!
Of course, during a pup mosh, it is a good idea to come prepared for an extended period spent on all fours. Knee pads and knuckle protection (like MMA boxing gloves) are important to mitigate potential injuries to yourself, and keeping sharp objects (like spiked collars and most piercings) out is as important for the other pups around you (and potentially their expensive gear).
While hoods, collars, mitts, harnesses, tails, and other accessories can enhance the experience, they are entirely optional. Pet play is about mindset, creativity, and personal enjoyment - Not about the equipment/gear you own.
Do I need to be a pup to join YEG-PAH?
We have pups, kittens, ponies, handlers, and even people who are only curious about pet play. Anyone is welcome to join our community and learn more about it!
The term “pup play” is really just used for simplicity, but is inclusive of all pets/creatures and handlers.
Is pup play always sexual?
No - pup play exists on a broad spectrum. Some people enjoy it purely for the community or social aspect, some for stress relief, some as a hobby. Others do incorporate it into a BDSM or sexual relationship.
Never assume another person's style of play. Respect personal boundaries and communicate openly.
Does pup play involve actual animal play?
No. Human pup play is conducted by adult humans, with other consenting adult humans. There is no involvement of any real animals at any time.
Does being a human pup mean I eat dog food?
No, dog food is made for dogs and was never intended for human consumption.
It might seem like a fun idea, but it can have unwanted results.
Treats or food for a human pup can take on many forms. Consider foods such as cereals or small candies, and there is nothing wrong with eating human food out of a dog bowl.
What is "Pup Space"?
"Pup Space" describes a mental state that people can achieve while playing. It often involves focusing on simple pleasures, playful interactions, reduced stress and temporarily stepping away from everyday responsibilities.
Some people are not able to achieve this mental state, which is perfectly normal, and some people can jump in and out of this state quickly and easily. Every pet is different and the end goal is that everyone can have fun and enjoy pet play how they see fit.
What is a Handler/Owner and what do they do?
A handler or owner is someone who interacts with the pup/pet in a guiding, supportive, or playful role. Every handler or owner has a different style which makes each relationship unique.
Handlers/owners don't always engage in pup play themselves and are not required to do so. Some enjoy seeing others engaged in pup play but don't like the gear themselves so they choose the role of handler.
Do I need a handler or owner myself?
No, most pets are actually considered 'strays', 'lone pups' or are members of a pack. Some just enjoy lone play or group play without having a dedicated handler or owner.
